Migraines And Headaches

A Migraine is very often secondary to an inflammatory event that is not adequately 'snuffed out' by the brainstem (this is a neurological event moreso than a vascular event - as it is commonly dubbed).

Normally, here's what happens:

Inflammatory chemicals fire the cerebral vessel nociceptors (pain receptors)--the fire begins and the alarm goes off.

There is a reflexive response from the brainstem's superior salivatory nucleus---the fire department gets the call and responds to the fire.

There is a vasodilation and increased blood flow to the inflamed area that "washes out" the inflammatory chemicals---the fire is snuffed.

OR

If the brainstem is slow to respond or doesn't respond at all due to low Frequency Of Firing (activation), here's what happens:

Inflammatory chemicals fire the cerebral vessel nociceptors (pain receptors)--the fire begins and the alarm goes off.

There is a SLOW or NO reflexive response from the brainstem's superior salivatory nucleus---the fire department is slow to respond, and the fire gets a foothold.

The inflammation increases, the pain sensing nociceptors are fired even more strongly and then cortical spreading depression starts--spreads like a wildfire, scorching the surround land and the nerve cells in the cortex start to "brown out" and may eventually 'black out."

Now, large patches of the cortex are under-firing and it can't control the mesencephalon (upper brainstem)--you have to go lay down in a quiet, dark room until the fire burns out.

Dr. Miller is a board certified chiropractic neurologist that addresses migraines in this way and has been successful in this approach. Common sense, conservative treatments are utilized to "strengthen" the neurological deficiencies and inflammatory mechanisms that set migraines into motion.

This is something that you'll just have to NOT live with.

Taking a neurological approach to a neurological event is a more appropriate action as opposed to attacking the symptoms and expecting the cause/s of the problem to go away.
